What LikeMe is built on, what it doesn’t know yet, and how to tell us we’ve got something wrong.

LikeMe suggests where you might live, what to prepare for, and who you might get on with. Those are consequential things to be wrong about, so this page shows the working.

It has six parts: the research behind the product, how the Culture Fingerprint is built, how a place gets read, what we won’t do, what we don’t know yet, and how to correct us. Parts four and five are the ones worth reading.

The research

Five things shape how LikeMe works. Each one is followed by what it actually changed.

01 PERSON–ENVIRONMENT FIT

A registered report — the analysis plan was peer-reviewed before the data were looked at, which makes the findings harder to nudge.

It found that how well someone fitted their surrounding community was associated with their wellbeing and their own reports of their health. It also found that immigrants fitted their communities less closely on average than natives did, and that fit was better in places with more foreign-born residents, particularly people from the same part of the world.

Similarity is not automatically better for everyone.

WHAT IT CHANGED

LikeMe has no “best places” list, because the research says one couldn’t exist. It starts from what you need, what you enjoy, what drains you, who’s coming with you, and how far from familiar you want to go.

02 MEASURED VS. LIVED

What exists and what it feels like are two different answers

A systematic review of agreement between perceived and objective neighborhood environment measures and associations with physical activity outcomes. Environment and Behavior, 49(8), 904–932.

A review of 85 studies published between 1990 and 2015. It found that measured neighbourhood data and residents’ own accounts of the same neighbourhood are related but distinct, and often disagree.

It also found the disagreement isn’t random. Socioeconomic position, particularly income, helped explain when somebody’s experience of their neighbourhood matched the official picture and when it didn’t.

SCOPE NOTE

The review is specifically about neighbourhood environments and physical activity. We’ve taken the general finding — measured and lived accounts diverge, and predictably so — rather than the domain-specific ones.

A systematic review of 35 cross-cultural training studies in tertiary education. Programmes with behavioural components had the most consistent evidence of effectiveness, and programmes combining behavioural and cognitive components were more effective than cognitive or didactic-only programmes.

Interaction with residents shaped both what visitors understood about a place and how they felt about it. The work draws on the idea of the “more knowledgeable other” — residents hold more detailed and more differentiated pictures of where they live than any visitor can assemble from outside.

Checking whether it helped

This one is ours rather than the literature’s, and we’d rather say so than dress it up.

PART 02

How the Culture Fingerprint is built

STATUS

Research-informed. Not yet validated.

We won’t describe the Culture Fingerprint as a validated instrument until it has been through the work that makes one. That work is planned and sequenced, and it’s set out in full in Part 05 — cognitive interviews first, before anyone joins the cohort, then item analysis, reliability and test–retest checks, measurement invariance, fairness review, and the outcome test that can only run once time has passed.

The Culture Fingerprint estimates how a person tends to move through everyday social warmth, social rules, structure, visibility and unfamiliar settings. It’s informed by established research.

It’s not a nationality quiz. It doesn’t assume passport, ethnicity, race or family background predicts where somebody will feel at home.

Those thirty facets are why two people can share an axis position and still differ underneath it — someone can welcome blunt practical correction but dislike being corrected in public, or dress visibly and never speak in a meeting.

Those aren’t contradictions. They’re why one slider per culture doesn’t work.

How questions are written

01 A scene, not a value.

“I value directness” is what people wish were true. Being corrected in the wrong queue, out loud, is diagnostic.

02 Both answers stay dignified.

No item should imply the other side is cold, rude, fake, fragile or immature.

03 Preference, not ability.

Someone can read the room perfectly and hate having to.

04 Which cost you’d accept.

Every style costs something. Directness can cost smoothness; indirectness can cost clarity.

05 No universal goods.

Everyone wants kindness and useful feedback. The item has to test method, timing or setting.

06 Balanced across poles.

People’s tendency to agree varies by cultural background, so yes-mapped items are balanced within each subdimension to counter it.

07 No moral pressure.

If pilot users can tell which answer is the socially correct one, the item gets rewritten.

PRICING, BECAUSE IT’S A METHOD QUESTION TOO

The test is free, at full accuracy.

Being read accurately is the whole promise, so it isn’t a paid feature. Anything paid can add presentation or tools — never accuracy.

PART 03

How a place gets read

A place profile is measured on the same dimensions as a person, from sources we can name, with a confidence level attached. It’s never a vibe and never a national stereotype.

As local as the evidence allows

Country-level datasets are coarse background at best, and a country is the last thing we’d read a place as. A read is written at the smallest unit the evidence supports — a city, a town, a village, a neighbourhood — and where we only have country-level signal, it says so.

A place is a spread, not a point

Every profile carries a central norm, how much people vary around it, how confident we are, and where the place is known to differ inside itself.

What we won’t do

These aren’t limitations. They’re decisions, and most of them cost us something.

WE WON’T · 01 · NO EXCEPTIONS

Average safety into fit.

A place can suit you socially and still be unsafe or inaccessible for you. Safety findings are shown plainly and can take a place off a list. Nothing about how adaptable somebody is overrides them.

WE WON’T · 02

Hand you to anybody.

LikeMe is an independent project built by an immigrant founder. It isn’t a government service, an immigration service, or a partner of one. What you tell LikeMe shapes what LikeMe shows you. It doesn’t go to an institution, an employer or a border, and a university or partner never sees an individual person’s answers — only what a group keeps needing.

Describe a country as a personality.

Regions, cities, neighbourhoods, classes, generations and communities differ sharply inside the same borders. National culture datasets are background signal at best, and where a read only has country-level evidence behind it, it says so. This is why a read is written as local as the evidence allows — it’s slower to build and it’s the only honest unit.

Use an average to describe a person.

Aggregate scores can’t tell you about an individual. Inferring one from the other is the ecological fallacy, and refusing to do it rules out most of the shortcuts available in this space.

WE WON’T · 05

Treat identity as destiny.

Race, gender, disability, sexuality, religion, nationality and class change how a place receives you. They don’t determine what you like, and LikeMe never matches on them. A lens only changes what a read tells you if you opt into it, and it never becomes a filter that sorts you toward people who share it.

WE WON’T · 06

Fill a gap with a guess.

Where the evidence is thin it stays marked thin, and new places open with a factual baseline and a people layer that says how new it is. Coverage will look uneven for a while because of it — but “we don’t know this place well yet” is a thing you can act on, and invented precision isn’t.

Charge for accuracy.

The full-accuracy Culture Fingerprint is free. Being read properly is the whole promise, so it can’t sit behind a payment. Anything paid adds presentation or tools.

PART 05

What we don’t know yet, and how we’re finding out

Four open questions. We’d rather publish them than answer them early.

01 OPEN QUESTION

Do the questions mean the same thing to everyone?

An item can be perfectly clear to one reader and ambiguous to another, and cross-cultural instruments fail here more often than anywhere else. Swipe-format questions add a second risk: how readily people agree, and how readily they pick extremes, varies across cultural backgrounds. We balance items across both poles within each subdimension to counter it — but balance is a design intention until it’s tested.

The item rules in Part 02 apply meanwhile: both poles kept dignified, and anything with an obviously correct answer rewritten.

HOW WE FIND OUT

Cognitive interviews across cultural backgrounds, before the cohort rather than after it: people take items and tell us what they understood each one to be asking. Items that get read differently than intended are rewritten or cut. Then item analysis in the founding cohort, which removes questions that turn out to be universal, confusing, over-correlated or biased.

02 OPEN QUESTION · THE HARDER HALF

Does a Place Read describe the place accurately?

This is the harder half and it gets less attention than the person side. A place profile is built from residents, newcomers, migrants and official data, weighted differently because each is reliable about different things.

Whether that weighting is right is an empirical question we haven’t answered yet. In the meantime nothing rests on it silently: every line carries where it came from, thin evidence stays marked thin, and where residents and newcomers disagree you see the disagreement rather than our resolution of it.

HOW WE FIND OUT

A place-agreement study: in two or three cities, residents and recent newcomers answer the same questions about the same place. Where they converge, confidence rises. Where they diverge, that’s a finding rather than noise — and it’s usually the insider–outsider gap, which is precisely what a newcomer needs to see. It also tells us whether our reporter weighting is calibrated or invented.

03 OPEN QUESTION · THE ONE THAT MATTERS

Does the read match what actually happened?

Everything else is process; this is the outcome. Did the people we matched to a place later report the fit, the friction and the stretch we predicted?

HOW WE FIND OUT

A read at onboarding, then the same people asked at three months and six what actually turned out to be easy, what ground on them, and what surprised them. Compared against what the model said in advance.

04 OPEN QUESTION

Can we tell a good stretch from a slow drain?

Stretch Zone decides whether a place that doesn’t match you is worth going to anyway. At the start the two outcomes look identical — both are hard — so the six-month check in Question 03 can’t separate them. The difference shows up at a year.

This is why a stretch is never offered quietly. It’s labelled as one, the read says what would make it work — a friend, the language, a reason to be there — and the choice stays yours with all of that in front of you. Safety and access are settled before any of it. What we don’t yet know is how well we predict which stretches hold, and that’s what the year is for.

HOW WE FIND OUT

Follow the people who chose a place outside their natural fit, and ask at a year which it turned out to be. And whether the anchors we said would make it survivable — a friend, the language, a reason to be there — actually did.

AND RUNNING THROUGHOUT

Bias review across age, gender, race, disability, neurodivergence, language, nationality and migration stage.

Reliability and test–retest checks once there are enough people, then measurement invariance testing before we compare scores across any groups — because until that’s done we can’t know the questions mean the same thing to everyone.

Every place profile stays correctable: consistent contradiction from people who live somewhere updates it.

The Culture Fingerprint stays unvalidated in our own language until Questions 01, 03 and 04 are answered.
